Restore Democratic Elections to Honduras
The incumbent president (Juan Orlando Hernández) is claiming victory in the November 26, 2017 election. The people disagree. There have been mass protests claiming fraud. Demonstrators across the country of 8 million people have been met by state violence, resulting in severe human rights violations, including at least 30 killed, many more injured, and hundreds arrested—many of them detained in military posts. The president has ordered a state of siege and nighttime curfew.
The international community has condemned the heavy-handed response of incumbent President Juan Orlando Hernández toward those who dispute the results. The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) has pointed out a wide arrange of irregularities and suspected incidents of fraud. The OAS is calling for new elections to be held. Unfortunately, the US government does not agree.
On January 2, 2018 The Guardian reported: US silent on alleged military police responsibility for deaths despite $114m aid to security forces.
Not only has the US been silent, they've gone against the international community by recognizing the fraudulent election results.
Please TAKE ACTION now.
Please contact your US congressperson. Urge your representative to
1- call on President Trump to join with the OAS in calling for new elections
2- call on President Trump to relate to the president of Honduras that abuses by state security forces must end immediately
3- call for immediate suspension of all security assistance to Honduras
4- co-sponsor HR 1299, which would suspend US security aid to Honduras until human rights violations committed by the Honduras security forces cease and their perpetrators are brought to justice.
Please contact your US senator. Echo the same lists of requests.
Thank you for taking a few mintues to act in solidarity with the people of Honduras.
