Migrant Children Suffering in Open-Air Desert Camps
After Border Patrol agents directed a family to a temporary camp to await making their asylum claims, which did not provide any shelter from the conditions outside, a young girl began convulsing. The father wrapped his daughter in a blanket he had found in the mud and called 911. When the ambulance finally arrived, he was informed by a Border Patrol agent that he would lose his chance at asylum if he left the camp and accompanied his family. This story is only one of many highlighted in a court filing that takes aim at the living conditions at open-air camps near the US-Mexico border in California.
